How often do you wonder why your sick because you eat right and take care of yourself? Who knew that sitting put would be a cause of illness?
Physical inactivity is one of the biggest contributors to lifestyle or non-communicable diseases today. In fact, if you look at most of the lifestyle conditions such as; obesity, heart disease and diabetes, being more physically active can go a long way to helping reduce or even prevent these conditions. One way to keep your activity levels up is by engaging in NEAT (Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis) every day.
This is any type of physical activity that isn’t structured, purposeful exercise. Washing dishes, buying groceries and folding laundry are all NEAT activities, as are the things like foot jiggling, standing or even chewing gum. If you spend all day sitting at your desk, fidgeting, getting up to get water and walking to speak to a colleague instead of emailing, all add to your day’s activities.
And ladies get this part, studies show that NEAT can account for anywhere from 15% to 50% of your daily energy expenditure – you could be burning up to 8 400kJ a day just because you don’t sit still!
